Rhode Island has a sexting law. Under this sexting law, a minor caught possessing and/or distributing images of herself is charged with a status offense in the state’s family court.
Minors caught possessing and/or distributing sexual images of other minors are still charged under the state’s child pornography law. The individual is charged with a felony and if convicted, faces jail time and must register as a sex offender.
Punishments:
- If you create and distribute sexual images of yourself: you are charged with a status offense in Rhode Island’s family court.
- If you possess and distribute sexual images of your friends: you are charged under the state’s child pornography laws which is a felony and must register as a sex offender.
